COMMERCIAL PLATES

Commercial plate licensing is for business owners, contractors, and self-employed individuals.

Your commercial class registration for your vehicle will depend on the type of business and nature of goods being transported. The total weight of your vehicle (vehicle and load) may affect the final cost per year.

Please note that vehicle classes don’t necessarily correspond with the licence class required to drive the vehicle.

For interprovincial or international travel, you may be eligible for prorate.

Prorate

Prorate is the process of calculating registration fees and taxes for multiple jurisdictions. Prorated registrations are applicable to commercial carriers who are based in Alberta . To be considered for prorate registration, vehicles must travel inter-provincially and/or inter-nationally in Alberta and at least one other province or state.

Rather than obtaining and paying for plates and registration in each jurisdiction, Prorate offers the advantage of proportionate licencing in Alberta . The fees are calculated by the percentage of total distance travelled within each jurisdiction.

Alberta Transportation, Prorate Services centrally processes all applications for prorated registrations. When processing is completed Prorate Services provides the carrier with a Fee Notice, which serves as a break down of the respective fees.

Southland Registrations can collect the amounts specified on the Fee Notices, and can issue the necessary plates, validation tabs, prorate registration and cab card. The cab card indicates the provinces and/or states in which travel has been approved and fees have been paid.
